Day 2:  Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour, Sunday, September 13

Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour

After breakfast, proceed for a city tour of Kathmandu. Visit the Swoyambunath Stupa, Boudhanath Stupa and Patan City. Swoyambhunath Stupa, atop the hillock is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal enlisted in the World Heritage Site. The stupa of Boudhanath lies 8 KMs east of Kathmandu. This ancient colossal stupa is one of the biggest in the world and the center of Buddhism in the world. It was listed in the UNESCO Heritage Monument in 1979. Patan City is an enchanting mélange of palace buildings, artistic courtyard and former palace complex. One remarkable monument here is a 16th century temple dedicated to the Hindu God Lord Krishna, built entirely of stone.

Your full day explores Kathmandu Valley's most profound spiritual and architectural treasures, beginning at Swayambhunath—the iconic hilltop stupa where Buddhist pilgrims have ascended for centuries, rewarded with panoramic views over the valley and the all-seeing eyes of Buddha gazing across the Himalayas. Continue to Boudhanath, one of the world's largest stupas and the beating heart of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet itself. This UNESCO site pulses with devotion: watch monks in crimson robes meander around the massive white dome while prayer flags flutter overhead.

Journey south to Patan, the "City of Beauty," where former royal palaces and artistic courtyards reveal why this ancient kingdom rivaled Kathmandu in splendor. The highlight: a remarkable 16th-century temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, built entirely of stone with intricate carvings that represent the pinnacle of Newar craftsmanship.

This three-hour ascent through blue pine forest leads to one of Buddhism's most sacred sites, where Guru Rinpoche, the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, is said to have flown on a tigress's back in the 8th century and meditated in a cave for three months. Even from the viewpoint teahouse, where prayer flags flutter and monks' chants drift on mountain winds, the monastery's dramatic perch defies comprehension—a testament to devotion that transcends architectural possibility. Descend to experience authentic Bhutanese hospitality at a traditional farmhouse, where you'll enjoy a therapeutic hot stone bath—river stones heated in fire then placed in wooden tubs of medicinal herbs—followed by local refreshments, the perfect conclusion to your pilgrimage in this extraordinary kingdom.
