Madrid Through the Centuries

During the 17th century, Madrid became the preferred setting for our writers of the Golden Age and the Barrio de las Letras witnessed the aspirations of the unlimited imagination of writers, actors and actresses, producers and entrepreneurs seeking their place among the Muses and the Parnassus.

Cervantes, Quevedo, Góngora, Calderón, Lope de Vega, Bécquer, Zorrilla, Azorín, Echegaray, Valle Inclán, García Lorca ... The illustrious neighbors who left their mark on every glance, at every step waiting to discover, are almost uncountable. The House of Lope de Vega will be the first page in our book and the Plaza de Santa Ana our last. Learn about how the city has evolved over the centuries on a fascinating walking tour across the city with our expert guide, having the opportunity to understand Madrid at a glance.

The Museo del Prado dates back almost 200 years and its origins and unique nature are largely due to the collecting tastes of Spain’s 16th- and 17th-century monarchs. Collecting at that period differed from the present day. The Prado has been described as a museum of painters not of paintings, given that its artists are represented in a superlative manner with, for example, the largest holdings of Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Velázquez and Goya, some numbering more than 100 works.

Since its foundation in 1819, the Museo del Prado has played a key role in the evolution of art history. It has been crucial for the rediscovery of the Spanish Primitives and emblematic figures such as El Greco, and for positioning Velázquez as the greatest figure in the Spanish pictorial Parnassus, while its galleries have inspired some of the most avant-garde painters of the past 150 years. Enjoy an enlightening tour guided by an art expert.

Head to the world-known Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía for an enlightening tour through some of the best masterpieces explained by our genius guide.

The Museo Reina Sofía opened its doors in 1990 to show contemporary Spanish art in relation to the international context. The museum is a crossroads of spaces, objects and times: a place where narratives are woven together and stories told, rendering every intersection meaningful as it leads off in one direction or another, turning it into an intense experience of discovery and knowledge.

Its collection includes works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Francis Bacon, René Magritte or Alexander Calder, among many more. The centerpiece is Guernica (1937), by Pablo Picasso.

This tour will give you a general idea of the history of Segovia as well as the highlights of the city. You will learn details of the imposing Roman Aqueduct, walk through beautiful medieval streets where you'll find a lot of palaces and emblazoned houses, such as the famous Casa de los Picos, old courtyards and turreted houses like the Torreón de los Marqueses de Lozoya. Not to mention the beautiful small squares and Romanesque churches such as San Martin, until you reach the Plaza Mayor. "La Plaza", as Segovians call it, has witnessed such important events as the proclamation of Isabella the Catholic as Queen of Castile.

Visit the last Gothic Cathedral of Spain, also known as the Lady of the Cathedrals, and continue your walk through the beautiful Romanesque neighborhood of Las Canonjías to reach the famous Alcázar of Segovia. This fortress has its origins in Roman times but it was during the late Middle Ages when it had its period of splendor, used as the residence of the Kings of Castile until the 16th century. Its silhouette and location were an inspiration for Walt Disney himself.

Walking Tour

French croissants and and markets filled with cheese shops and fresh oysters? Now we're talking.

Out of all the places to spend their summer holiday the European royals chose the French Basque coast, spending the warm months of the year drinking champagne and gambling. These days you can still do the same though on our case we will look for fresh croissants, chic shops, an ocasional oyster with champagne, a smelly cheese and quaint streets and squares.

We will start in Biarritz, one of the most chic beach resorts in Europe that renowned in 1854 when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) built a palace on the beach (now the Hôtel du Palais). Today, the town is also popular among tourists and surfers thanks to its beautiful beaches.

Then we will head to the former Basque Corsairs’ capital, Saint Jean de Luz. This small fishing village became rich in the 16th century from fishing, whaling and piracy. Today is a quiet town with streets boasting the names of famous pirates and a delightful historic centre dotted with traditional wooden houses, a fine sandy beach and a small marketplace that offers local delicacies. Take this opportunity to indulge in fresh seafood and other local dishes at one of our favorite restaurants.

Driving through the beautiful "La Corniche" coastal road, back into Spain, we will get to Hondarribia, one of the most beautiful towns in the Basque Country. Its medieval old town is one of the few fortified towns in the Basque Country and its walls give it a special appearance by evoking an epic past. Hondarribia's gastronomy is superb, with bars and taverns famous for its delicious pintxos. Here you'll also see the typical Basque fishermen houses, with colorful balconies filled up with heaps of flowers.
